Dr John Locked Down

Dr. John's collaboration with The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, Locked Down, released last week on Nonesuch Records, landed at #33 on the Billboard 200, making it, remarkably, the highest chart debut in the New Orleans legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s 50-plus-year career. It also debuted at #1 on Billboard's Blues Albums chart and #8 on the Rock Albums chart, and had an excellent first week outside the US as well, entering the charts in the top 100 in many countries, including #16 in Holland, #27 in Norway, #40 in New Zealand, #51 in the UK, and #51 in Ireland. Locked Down has received rave reviews everywhere from SPIN and Pitchfork to The Guardian and NPR, with many echoing David Fricke’s assessment in Rolling Stone that “Dr. John has made his best album in four decades.” Dr. John (a.k.a. Mac Rebennack) premiered Locked Down live onstage with Auerbach (the album's producer) and the band from the album over three nights at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)'s Howard Gilman Opera House last weekend, as part of his three-week residency at the venue, Dr. John: Insides Out. As noted earlier this week in the Nonesuch Journal, the New York Times's Jon Pareles wrote of the performance: "Physical and spiritual, earthly and supernatural, a memento mori and a promise of transcendence—all were aspects of Dr. John’s music for the night."

Enzo Avitabile - Black Tarantella

Paolo Fresu - Omar Sosa - Alma

Paco De Lucia - En Vivo Conciertos Live In Spain 2010

Flamenco is often burdened by its own peculiar lovers, who always seem to be fond of its past days and remain stunned by the yearning idolatry of times they didn´t actually ever experience in first person. Yet too many “Jondo know-it -all-” were turning their gaze with disdain to avoid sacrilege while Flamenco has been giving us all unreached heights. It is time, flamenco pals, to share our good fortune and witness the best artist of all times, Paco de Lucia, let´s enjoy together his art. Some have been doing it for half a century already but… I would say: it´s never too late if the Sonata is worth it. Each guitarist has his peculiar world; Paco- the Prince of Flamenco harmony- has a whole universe on his own and has given us several musical worlds that enlightened our culture and encouraged planetary souls. In this country, the land of envious – it´s a saying –, to be Paco de Lucía and still be alive and kicking is more than worth it. How can we celebrate it? Live. Paco de Lucía has spent his lifetime on the road, on the air, with jet-lag on board. This way he kept safe from slander in great shape. He sings with a borrowed voice "Fly, I just want to fly; I just want to live on my own, with no regrets". Paco has never lost his habit of expanding and communicating the splendor of the poorest Andalusian message and he still is standing for it. This proves the good stuff happened to him on many stages around the globe backed up by his latter band. A rush, like an airplane free stream cutting the air, sometimes it takes our breath away , others leads us to relax flowing with the groove on & on. This is the most reliable Paco de Lucía, because it reflects his own life. Always playing and playing, flying from one end to the opposite shore. Flying with him, getting through different border controls stretching up boundaries, there is a superb team that is constantly ready to re-read his most recent works, plenty of “aging” house achievements. Almighty Paco de Lucia on the guitar, Duquende and David de Jacoba, always with their quejío soaring to heaven, as a resounding monumental echo, their bulería requiem for an irreparable unexpected loss: "Moraíto forever ". He will dance to its grooves wherever he shall be now. There is much pain and joy concentrated in these intense minutes, as in a full double album, a Hi-Fi response structured in two parts - one per each CD – that Paco de Lucía offers in his shows. It is a sheer wonder as the rain in Seville (Hollywood dixit). We also listen to his second guitar player, his debutant nephew Antonio Sánchez - what an art family. In exact synchrony the rhythm section marks the earth, proposing a calm see naturally pictured with the unique Israel Suárez, “Piraña” drums and Alain Pérez´s tasty fingered bass lines, occasionally joined by Antonio´s , “El Farru”, thoroughbred, prodigious and brave feet zapateo. Still we have to quote the keyboards layer and, above all, (how cool!) the astonishing jet booster Antonio Serrano´s harmonic, which deserves both ears and the tail - if we are allowed to use the bullfighting terminology - but also if not. Everything is set up. I invite you to join the concert, which is not a usual one; the appointment is, citizens, with Paco de Lucía. Let´s listen to it and then, because we can, let´s proudly say out loud: Ole, Paco, you're the greatest! We love you

Abraham Inc ( David Krakauer - Fred Wesley - Socalled )

An unprecedented collaboration between three cultural visionaries: DAVID KRAKAUER, champion of klezmer music and world-class clarinetist; legendary funk trombonist and arranger FRED WESLEY, celebrated for his work with James Brown and George Clinton; and hip-hop renegade and beat architect SOCALLED - Abraham Inc. heralds a time when boundaries are eroding, mutual respect is presumed, and musical traditions can hit with full force without concession or appropriation. Backed by a three-piece horn section led by Wesley plus musicians who collaborate frequently with Krakauer and Socalled - and the result is an all-out klezmer-funk dance party!
On the anniversary of James Brown’s birthday, it seemed fitting that one of JB’s most valued sidemen from the late ’60s, his former musical director and trombonist Fred Wesley (pictured), would be doin’ it to death at the legendary Apollo Theater. But on “Hava Nagila”? Oy!

This endlessly surprising yet highly successful hybrid of klezmer, funk and hip-hop had the enthusiastic crowd—young and old, Jews and gentiles, whites and blacks—dancing ecstatically in the aisles like it was a Jewish wedding. Wesley brought the funk while virtuoso clarinetist David Krakauer delivered the passionate intensity and deep Jewish soul that ties him to the lineage of klezmer clarinet kings like Naftule Brandwein and Dave Tarras. Montreal-based multi-instrumentalist and visionary beat architect Josh Dolgin, aka Socalled, provided a bridge between the klezmer and hip-hop worlds with his audacious Hebraic rapping while the Bronx-bred emcee C-Rayz Walz brought street cred to this unlikeliest of collaborations with his remarkable freestyling facility and stark urban imagery.

Krakauer, who since the mid ’90s has led renegade Klezmer Madness!, another experimental hybrid band that cleverly blends Eastern European Jewish music with avant-garde improvisation and surf-rock guitar styles, describes the adventurous Abraham, Inc. project as “a band where Jews make ‘phat beats’ and play funky lines while African-Americans play music from Yidl’ Mitn’ Fidl’ and sing Hebraic chants, interacting with the highest level of mutual respect and understanding for each other’s musicality, humanity, intelligence and rich cultural background.”

They did precisely that on the spirited opener, “Baleboosteh” (a Yiddish term meaning “the woman of the house”), which seamlessly blended funk rhythms, Eastern lines and Socalled’s call-and-response rap with C-Rayz. Their slamming, syncopated recreation of “Hava Nagila” was dubbed “The H Tune” while Wesley resurrected one of his classic James Brown funk horn arrangements on “Push,” in which trumpeter Curtis Taylor slipped in a quote from P-Funk’s “Flashlight” during his solo.

C-Rayz strolled the front of the stage on a funky rendition of Socalled’s buoyant klezmer number “Oyfn Hoif” and was later showcased on a powerfully moving rap about life in the ’hood, accompanied only by Socalled on upright piano playing Richard Rodgers’ stirring “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue.” Krakauer, the homerun hitter of this crew, unleashed his jaw-dropping chops on the hypnotic “Table Pounding,” named for a Hassidic ritual involving much wine and the slamming of fists. At the peak of his soaring solo, Krakauer’s whole body quaked with visceral intensity, as if he were trying to leap into the air. And he wailed with unrestrained passion on the hauntingly beautiful “Ms NC” (named for his wife) and the rousing klezmer throwdown “Moskowitz and Loops of It,” which had Socalled switching to accordion. Wesley hit on a familiar theme with his downhome storytelling about his Southern family reunion on “Breakin’ Bread” while Socalled got the audience involved in his politically tinged rap “The Good Old Days.” And for a rousing finale, Wesley led the crowd on the chorus of his funky, JB-inspired “House Party.”

The stars of this show—Wesley, Krakauer, Socalled and C-Rayz—were ably supported by a stellar band featuring Jerome Harris on electric bass, Sheryl Bailey and Allen Watsky on guitars, Brandon Wright on tenor sax and Michael Sarin on drums. Following this world premiere of Abraham, Inc., they’re taking this funky show on the road. Watch for an upcoming recording and live DVD recorded at this Apollo gig.

Fatoumana Diawara - Fatou

Fatoumata Diawara (aka Fatou) was born of Malian parents in the Ivory Coast in 1982. As a child she became a member of her father's dance troupe and was a popular performer of the wildly flailing didadi dance from Wassoulou, her ancestral home in western Mali. She was an energetic and headstrong girl and at the age of twelve her refusal to go to school finally prompted her parents to send her to live and be disciplined by an aunt in Bamako. She was not to see her parents again for over a decade. Her aunt was an actress, and a few years after arriving, Fatou found herself on a film set looking after her aunt's infant child. The film's director was captivated by Fatou's adolescent beauty and she was given a one line part in the final scene of the film 'Taafe Fangan' ('The Power of Women'). This led to her being given a lead role by the celebrated director Cheick Omar Sissoko in his 1999 film 'La Genèse' (Genesis). At the age of eighteen Fatou travelled to Paris to perform the classical Greek role of Antigone on stage. After touring with the production she returned to Mali where she was given the lead in Dani Kouyaté's popular 2001 film 'Sia, The Dream of the Python'. The film tells the story of a West African legend called Sia, a young girl who defies tradition. To many in Mali, Guinea, Senegal and Burkina Faso, Fatou is Sia thanks to the film's enormous success throughout the region. Offers for further acting roles poured in but Fatou's family wanted her to settle down and marry and forced her to announce, live on Malian television, that she was abandoning her career as an actress. In 2002 Jean-Louis Courcoult, the director of the renowned French theatre company, Royale de Luxe, travelled to Bamako to offer Fatou a part in his new production. An unmarried woman is considered a minor in Malian society so her family's permission was required. They refused. After much soul searching Fatou took the daring decision to run away and at Bamako airport she managed to board a plane for Paris, narrowly escaping the pursuit of the police who had been alerted to the girl's 'kidnapping'. With Royal de Luxe Fatou performed a variety of roles around the world including tours in Vietnam, Mexico and throughout Europe. During rehearsals and quiet moments she took to singing backstage for her own amusement. She was overheard by the director and was soon singing solo during the company's performances. Encouraged by the reception from audiences she began to sing in Parisian clubs and cafes during breaks from touring. Here she met Cheikh Tidiane Seck the celebrated Malian musician and producer who invited her to travel with him back to Mali to work on two projects as chorus vocalist; 'Seya' the GRAMMY nominated album by Mali's star Oumou Sangaré and 'Red Earth' the GRAMMY winning Malian project by American jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater. When the albums were released Fatou toured worldwide as singer and dancer with both projects. On her return to France Fatou took the role of Karaba in the popular touring musical 'Kirikou and Karaba'. She was encouraged to take the role by her friend Rokia Traore who also inspired her to take up the guitar: "To me it was a wonderful and daring thing: a Malian girl with an acoustic guitar. Why should the guitar be only for men?" Fatou bought herself a guitar and started to teach herself, and at the same time began to write down her own compositions. She made the decision to dedicate herself to her passion, music. She worked to complete an album's worth of songs and started recording demos for which she composed and arranged all the titles, as well as playing guitar, percussion, bass and singing lead and harmony vocals. An introduction from Oumou Sangaré resulted in a record deal with World Circuit and the recording of her debut album. Between recording sessions she found time to collaborate on Damon Albarn's Africa Express and contribute vocals to albums by Cheikh Lô, AfroCubism, Herbie Hancock's GRAMMY winning Imagine Project and Orchestra Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. Since the release of the highly acclaimed debut 'Fatou' (19 September 2011) Fatoumata has toured extensively with her band as well as with Damon Albarn, Tony Allen and Flea as part of the 'Rocket Juice and the Moon' project. As well as a live tour the group recorded an album of the same name (Released March, 2012).

Romano - Sclavis - Texier 3 + 3

Aldo Romano - drums, percussion / Louis Sclavis - saxophone, clarinet / Henri Texier - bass + Enrico Rava - trumpet (1,2,7,10) / Nguyen Le - guitar (1,3,7,10) / Bojan Z - piano (1,5,10)

Markelian Kapedani - Balkan Bop

Oggi si potrebbe definire la musica di Kapedani One of the Shapes Of Jazz To Come.

Balkan Bop

Cous Cous in Tunisia

I Remember My Dad
Ballad.

One for Bud

Davaj, Russo – ДABAЙ = avanti.

Dave Douglas United Front : Brass Ecstasy At Newport

Tracklist :

1. Spirit Moves (live) 5:02
2. Rava (live) 10:04
3. Fats (live) 3:34
4. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (live) 7:30
5. United Front (live) 6:17
6. Bowie (live) 12:28

Originally recorded by WBGO Jazz 88 and presented as part of NPR’s live concert series, the album captures the group’s spectacular performance during the 2010 Carefusion Newport Jazz Festival.

“There was a special feeling for us on taking the drive out to the festival grounds at Fort Adams State Park,” said Douglas. “On the day of the gig, each of us was flying in from a different location. The weather was cooperating, and I remember watching boats in the harbor…such a magnificent setting. During the set each of the tunes grew into new proportions that day, stretching in all sorts of directions from their original studio release.”

Picking up where their critically acclaimed debut Spirit Moves (Greenleaf 2009) left off, United Front (Douglas’ 32nd release) sees this all-star band plunging into Douglas' compositions (plus one Hank Williams Sr. tune) with an intensity and exuberance garnered only at a live jazz concert, particularly one with the legacy and spirit of Newport. The album features tunes from Spirit Moves including the 12-plus minute set closer “Bowie” – a tribute to Lester Bowie - that steadily works the crowd into a loud and appreciative frenzy. Also included are two previously unreleased songs, “Spirit Moves” and “United Front.”

Pierre Dorge Presents New Jungle Orchestra

Pierre Dørge and New Jungle Orchestra are celebrating a generation of international music- making. That longevity, allied with their perennial freshness of sound, places them right up there with great enduring bands of the past - Basie, Herman, Kenton, Ellington. Ensembles that reinvigourated themselves over the decades, while remaining true to their original purpose. The comparison between Dørge’s N.J.O. and the Ellington orchestra is pertinent since Duke was and is a constant inspiration to Pierre. And both men provided most of the material for their aggregations, always
composing with specific soloists in mind.

Thirty years, three decades, is a wide wedge of a lifetime for any group of creative artists to stay together. To remain as a unit for so long, the stimulation and demands of the repertoire have to be exceptional. And every member must feel satisfied that he/she is making a full contribution to the evolution and development
of the whole. A player who feels marginalised will soon seek opportunities elsewhere. A vital core of four musicians have been with the N.J.O. from the start. Of course there were personnel changes along the way, so that now the ensemble is truly multi-generational. But there is an ongoing stable foundation that can accommodate an occasional infusion of new voices. The present line-up is virtually unchanged since Pierre returned to the SteepleChase fold in 2007 with the orchestra’s brilliant CD “Jazz Is Like A Banana” (SCCD
31636).

While the NJO’s continued existence is now assured, it was not always so. The first 13 years were a struggle. Often a gig would pay quartet wages to a group of ten. In those circumstances it was love of the music that sustained the ensemble. As Pierre observes, the turning point came in 1993 when the orchestra was chosen as a state ensemble, representing Denmark on royal visits at home and around the world. For instance when Danish royalty went to South Africa at the invitation of Nelson Mandela, the N.J.O. was there too.

Suddenly Pierre and his colleagues were in terrific demand, playing 80 concerts a year, and a growing audience was attracted to the band’s unique blend of jazz, folk and classical elements merged into a vibrantly exciting, international whole. “I never set out to be a bandleader,” says Pierre. “I was interested in composing and arranging and I obviously wanted to hear my music performed. But then I found out you had to negotiate fees, make travel arrangements and deal with a whole lot of administrative stuff. In the first year none of us talked about money, but finance has to be a factor if musicians are turning down other jobs to play with you.”

Then there were the social and musical problems that inevitably arise in every band.
“One guy doesn’t want to play Ellington tunes, another wants to play only Ellington material. Someone else demands that we should concentrate on free jazz. So, as a leader, you have to try to keep everyone happy. My philosophy was that we should use all the best elements from the many different styles of music, combining them in our own way". “When writing, I have tried to employ the most powerful side of each musician’s character, and to set them a challenge. I also try to put myself in the place of the audience and think about what would be interesting and pleasing to their ear. When we have added new players, it has provided fresh inspiration, stimulating different ideas and possibilities which are reflected in the writing. It is important to stay open-minded in music.”

The N.J.O. made its debut at the Music Cafe, Copenhagen, on 24 September, 1980, so in September 2010 that 30-year milestone was being marked by a week’s celebratory tour of Denmark, and release of this outstanding anniversary CD, the orchestra’s 22nd recording. The band was due to play a number of these pieces during their September progress. For this collection, Pierre decided to structure each composition to focus on a particular member of the orchestra. “I spoke to each musician and asked if they had any special preferences or wishes about which side of their style they would like me to portray. They approved of the idea and I
received very positive feedback". “My concept was to create 10 pieces of music, as 10 abstract pictures, each of them as an image of an individual, creative, New
Jungle musician. They responded with their special wishes for the individual piece.

I knew that the music would not shine unless the composition inspired and challenged each individual’s creativity. I can write the music, ut it is the musician who is the true creator of the spontaneous expression in the music - the here and now.”

June Tabor - Ashore

June Tabor’s recording career has consistently reached ever higher standards of performance and interpretation. Each of her albums has sought to match the highest technical standards with emotionally powerful performances and scintillating musical arrangements. Her forthcoming album – a stunning collection of songs concerning humankind’s relationship with the sea – is already being hailed by critics and long-time fans as another career highpoint.

June’s range and depth are unparalleled, and with Ashore she fully justifies her reputation as England’s foremost song interpreter. Ashore features a powerful set of contemporary songs alongside classic traditional ballads like ‘The Bleacher Lassie Of Kelvinhaugh’ and ‘The Great Selkie Of Sule Skerry’. The contemporary material includes a spine-tingling version of Elvis Costello’s ‘Shipbuilding’; a new recording of Ian Telfer’s ‘Finisterre’ (first recorded by June with the Oyster Band on ‘Freedom & Rain’) and two remarkable songs from the pen of Cyril Tawney – ‘The Grey Funnel Line’ and ‘The Oggie Man’. The album was recorded with June’s regular musicians – Andy Cutting, diatonic accordion; Mark Emerson, viola and violin, Tim Harries, double bass and Huw Warren, piano.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo - Song From A Zulu Famr

"There's such a rich, wonderful history. A personal history that comes from the group that's not always found in their CDs," Mitch Goldstein, the band's manager, tells Weekend Edition Sunday host Liane Hansen. "When we were sitting down and talking about the next project they wanted to work on, I suggested that they share with their audience — with their fans — their personal side.
"I've been to the farms where they grew up outside of Ladysmith [a town in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa]," Goldstein says. "When I'm there with Joseph [Shabalala], the founder of the group, and Albert [Mazibuko], they share stories of their childhood and the songs and what their parents used to teach them."

Since their earliest recordings, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has maintained a respect and a reverence for their past. Indeed, the centuries-old story of their homeland – sometimes joyous, sometimes troubled, but always rich and exhilarating – has been at the very foundation of this vocal group since its very beginning. But alongside the South African history witnessed by an entire world, there’s a quieter, more personal past shared by the members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo – a time of youth and innocence, when the world consisted of nothing more than the hills and open fields of their parents’ farms in Zulu country. Before the stage performances, before the collaborations with other artists, before the Grammy awards, before all of that and so much more, the only songs these children knew were the traditional folk tunes handed down to them by their parents, their grandparents, and the countless generations that preceded them.

And yet, for all the decades that have come and gone, these songs are still very much alive. Ladysmith Black Mambazo shares them with the world in their new recording, Songs From A Zulu Farm, set for release in January, 2011. Founder and frontman Joseph Shabalala and the other members of the group recreate the idyllic world in which they once lived and offer a glimpse of it to fans and audiences around the globe. To say this is their most personal work to date would be an understatement.

“These are songs from the earliest time in our lives,” says Shabalala. “These are stories our fathers and mothers and other relatives shared with us, songs our grandparents sang. These songs represent an important memory of our early life. When we sing these songs, we’re singing songs from our history. It is such a joy for us to put these stories and songs together for our fans to enjoy too.”

Included among the sixteen tracks is “Old McDonald…Zulu Style,” a South African rendition of the well known children’s song, “Old McDonald Had a Farm.” This original classic is reworked in ways never before imagined as it is piped through the language and culture of the Zulu people. As well, there are various traditional tunes taken directly from the Zulu culture. Some are cautionary tales: “Imithi Gobakahle” (“Children Come Home”) calls the children inside when the skies grow dark and a rainstorm threatens, while “Ekhaya” (“Don’t Leave Home too Soon”) encourages teenagers to stay with their families until they are truly ready to live on their own. Other songs are about the various mischievous and troublesome animals so prevalent in Zulu country: “Ntulube” (“Away, You River Snakes”), is an attempt to chase snakes and frogs out of the river to make the water better for swimming, while “Uthekwane” (“The Prettiest Bird?”) is an ode to a vain bird who boasts of her beauty to the other animals. Toward the end of the cd, Shabalala professes his love and longing for the times and places of his youth in “Thalaza,” a song he composed to encourage people of every nation and culture to reconnect to innocence of their younger years."

“Your roots are who you are,” says Shabalala, who revisits the farmland of his youth every month. “I go home to see the sights I’ve known since I was a baby. When I see that field I see my father and mother standing with me as a little boy. I love going home because it is just that…home.”

While Songs From A Zulu Farm may originate from the culture of South Africa, it speaks to certain joys of childhood that are universal. “There are children being told – or being sung – stories that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. These are the same stories and songs that they too will share with their children. We hope that these songs sung to children in South Africa can be shared with and enjoyed by families in other places in the world.

Barbara Casini - Barato Total

- Rene Aubry - Refuges Feat. Marc Buronfosse, Daniel Beaussier, Antoine Banville, Jun Miyake, Ali El Khatib.

" Music fills both air and bodies, meant for all and for none. It is music that reaches out to the unknown. Music is there not to convince or conquer, and when it wrings our hearts, it is to remind us that life is ardent, that man and the stars may be linked by invisible bridges. It progresses through the world, enfolding our lives like so many rings of power to render us invincible. Music does not choose who will love her, each of us is free to turn away or to embrace her, she invades our minds and takes her stand in the midst of our memories. For all eternity, this has been her rightful place and only human circumstances have momentarily dislodged her. Her place is at the heart of our history, like the calling of the wind, the echoing surf of the oceans, the rumbling of the storm.
René Aubry has invented a mysterious alchemy of sounds and melodies which one day stole into the world as if nothing were more normal than to soar beyond the clouds with the sole aim of lapping everything in a softer skin. This music, like a new lover, seems to recall long-buried memories of another time, another place, evoking a multitude of slight instances, the sketching of a gesture, a perfume, the sidelong glance of a woman passing.
The first time chance led me to these strange sounds, they were the accompaniment to a television portrait of Jean Genet.
I went straight to the film's director and producer to find the name of a composer inexplicably missing from the credits. Once I had tracked down the precious CD, I listened to it repeatedly day after day. At each hearing I experienced the same astonishment, the same mind-shift encouraging me to glide into worlds close by yet parallel, where fresh-created feelings welled up and flowed into landscapes newly invented at every instant, just for me, by the music. For this is a music that recreates the worlds of childhood, first loves, laughter and melancholy, lace gowns and Venetian carnival masks, where the solemn and the naive blend like voice and breath, banjo and concertina. What words, what novels, have been written to the sounds of "Dérives", "Steppe" or "Après la pluie" ? What secret connections exist between music and writing, both nourished in mysterious ways, both with the power to make the heart vibrate like a plucked violin string ?
We should thank these enchanters, who restore enchantment to the world ; we should welcome them gladly, telling them over and over again that they give meaning to our existence and that, without them, our long and only road would be that much more strewn with brambles and tears.

Xiomara - La Voz

- Xiomara – La Voz Feat. Axel Tosca Lougart, piano, Chris Smith, contrabbasso, Pedro Martinez, percussioni, Yosvany Terry, sassofoni.

They compare her to Celia Cruz, to Diana Ross, to Macy Gray, and to many other divas and music legends.

One thing for certain is that Xiomara Laurgart awakens a particular passion among her admirers and critics alike.

Xiomara Laugart is a diva, period. Xiomara can only be compared to Xiomara: she has her own spotlight, charisma, and a singular voice.

Considered by many as one of the most exceptional Cuban singers of all time, Xiomara is well versed in many genres: rumba, mambo, son, danzón, danzonete, merengue, guaracha, guaguancó, cumbia, hip-hop, the enormous gamut of Brazilian sounds, plena, tango, bolero, ballad-pop, rap, reggae, and even reggaeton... Her voice lets her get away with anything.

Some people, such as singer-songwriter Pablo Milanés recognize her as one of the best Latin American singers. Some go even further and make a place for her in the history of international music.

Those that go to her concerts are left amazed at how she carries herself with such grace, charisma, at what she puts into her songs, and the moving voice of the singer who could do the impossible with the range of her voice. While there is a lot to say about this woman who fills auditoriums anywhere she goes in the world, the majority of people prefer to save their breath and call her simply Xiomara Laugart.

Miglior chitarrista World Music nel 2008!

Leo Kottke

”Ascoltare Pierre Bensusan è come ringiovanire.

Siobhan Long, The Irish Times (Ireland)

”Incredibilmente meraviglioso.”
David Curry, The Canberra Sunday Times (Australia)

Kernan Andrews, The Galway Advertiser (Ireland)

”Bensusan, il costruttore di ponti.”
Don O'Mahony, The Irish Examiner (Ireland)

"Una musica palpabile, figurativa, infinitamente poetica e celestiale. Un inno all’umanità."
L’Arche (France)

Mike Joyce/The Washington Post (USA)

Siobhan Long, The Irish Times, 4 Stars (Ireland)

The Twin Cities Journal-USA

Kevin Eubanks - Zen Food

- Kevin Eubanks – Zen Food Feat. Gerry Etkins, tatiere, Rene Camacho. Bill Pierce, basso, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, batteria.

For nearly two decades, the world at large knew precisely where to find the acclaimed guitarist Kevin Eubanks. For five nights a week, Eubanks was cranking up the band and issuing steamy solos as music director on NBC’s “Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” In spring of 2010, after 18 years on the job, Eubanks decided to move on, although retirement was the last thing on his mind. That much is clearly stated in potent musical terms on Zen Food, his first recording for the Mack Avenue label. The title of the album is more than a piece of wordplay for Eubanks. “I think it’s a wonderful thing to acknowledge music as being food for your soul. The whole idea of it being Zen is that it’s a state of ‘being,’ not an ambition to become something else. It’s realizing everyone’s fingerprint is unique and expressing that uniqueness with sound, with ideas, with music. It’s all the same thing. It’s just another source of nutrition.”

Eubanks was born in Philadelphia into a highly musical family, between his respected pianist and pedagogue mother, Vera, who holds a Masters Degree; notable Jazz and Blues pianist uncle Ray Bryant; and Kevin’s accomplished brothers Robin—considered one of the greatest living trombonists—and the fine trumpeter Duane. Kevin was first drawn into music listening to the energetic sounds of fusion and progressive rock, then went on to study at Berklee. He has played with icons including McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Dave Holland and Ron Carter. In his own distinctive early career, Eubanks released many recordings for Elektra, GRP and Blue Note before his current signing with Mack Avenue in 2010.

In his band, Eubanks has a powerful rhythm section ally in drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith, who, like Eubanks, was a commanding presence on the music scene before heading west to the “Tonight Show” bandstand. Completing the ranks of this bold unit, which deftly combines “fusion” in the best sense with other stylistic turns, are saxophonist Bill Pierce, who holds the Woodwind Chair at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, keyboardist Gerry Etkins and bassist Rene Camacho. Zen Food evokes a sense of diversity and also collective continuity, qualities long in the making, and now ready to “hit the road” in a global way.

As for his long stint as musical foil for Jay Leno, Eubanks asserts, “I enjoyed the job. I enjoyed learning all these new things and meeting new people, and just seeing another side of what I didn’t know. Where I cut my teeth, I was never privy to what happens in Hollywood, by and large. I heard about it and knew a few people here and there. So, to get a bird’s eye view of all that was fascinating, and it still is.”

As he is quick to clarify, with a laugh, “I can’t very well say, oh, I’ll just go back to what I did. I’m a product of both things now, and happily so. I embrace everything I've learned and continue to learn about the mysterious ways of Hollywood.”

This “new” chapter in Eubanks’ life is, as he says, “not so foreign, because that’s all I used to do. It’s just at a different level. Musically, I’m at a different level, as well as personally. Everything is in a progressive state, with more experience in a lot of areas. It should be an interesting adventure.”

Speaking of his new chapter, Eubanks reasons that, “as physical and emotional human beings, we go through different phases in our life. I just think it was time for a change, for all the right reasons. It was a natural process, and I respected that. I thought, ‘ok, then do it.’ At the time that I took the job, I'd been on the road for 15 years, and I was tired of saying goodbye to everyone that I met. I thought it would be nice to be in one place for a while. I never dreamed it would turn into 18 years. It’s kind of the same process.”

Afrocubism

AfroCubism è il World Circuit's dream project. Come scrivono i produttori nelle note di copertina si tratta di “The original idea for the project that became “Buena Vusta Social Club”.

***ELIADES OCHOA guitar and vocals (born Songo la Maya, Cuba 1946)
With his trademark cowboy hat and penchant for wearing black, Eliades Ochoa has been dubbed 'Cuba's Johnny Cash'. There's more than a fashion statement in the comparison to America's greatest country singer, too, for Ochoa is a 'guajiro' (from the countryside) and a champion of rural Cuban styles such as son and guararcha.

One of the younger members of the Buena Vista Social Club, at 63, he's now become something of an elder statesman himself and has been a professional musician for almost half a century. For many years he was a regular at Santiago's famous Casa de la Trova and in 1978 he took over the leadership of Cuarteto Patria, a Cuban institution which by then had already been performing for almost 40 years. He recorded two albums with the group for the Mexican Corason label and in 1986 met the veteran singer Compay Segundo, who joined Cuarteto Patria for a time. While with the group Segundo recorded the album 'Chanchaneando' which featured the original version of 'Chan Chan'.

A decade after their first meeting, Ochoa and Segundo famously reunited to perform 'Chan Chan' as the opening track on the Grammy winning 'Buena Vista Social Club'. To that album Eliades also contributed lead vocals and guitar on El Cuarto de Tula, and his own guajira showcase on El Carretero. Since Buena Vista, he has recorded several fine albums under his own name including 'Cubafrica' (1998) with the great Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango; 'Sublime Ilusión' (1999); 'Tributo a Cuarteto Patria' (2000) and 'Estoy Como Nunca' (2002). He continues to lead Grupo Patria and tours regularly around the world.

***TOUMANI DIABATÉ kora (born Bamako, Mali 1965)
One of the most significant musicians in Africa, Toumani Diabaté is the leading exponent of the West African harp known as the kora. Born in Bamako, he inherited his musical gifts from a long family lineage of kora masters. A child prodigy, he recorded his debut album 'Kaira' in London in 1986 at the age of 21. Playing bass, rhythm and solo simultaneously on the instrument's 21 strings, it was the first ever album of solo kora music and the start of a remarkable international career.

As an innovative and experimental collaborator, he recorded the two acclaimed 'Songhai' albums with the Spanish flamenco group Ketama and has worked with Damon Albarn, Björk, and the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO). His collaboration with Taj Mahal on 1999's 'Kulanjan' explored the connections between West African music and the blues and was cited by Barrack Obama as his favourite album during the presidential election campaign.

In the more traditional vein, he has recorded widely with most of the greatest names in Malian music, both on his own albums and as a guest on releases by singers such as Salif Keita and Kasse Mady Diabaté. In recent years, he has recorded a series of thrillingly diverse releases for World Circuit, including two albums of kora-guitar duets with Ali Farka Touré, including the Grammy winning 'In the Heart of the Moon' (2004); 'Boulevard de l¹Indépendance' (2005) with his groundbreaking Symmetric Orchestra; and the acoustic solo kora collection 'The Mandé Variations' (2008).

***BASSEKOU KOUYATE ngoni (born Garana, Mali 1966)
Descended from a long line of griots, Bassekou Kouyate was born in the Segu region of Mali, where his mother was a famous singer and his father was a celebrated player of the ngoni ba, (banjo-like lute) on the local wedding party circuit. At the age of 16, Bassekou took his father's place and by the end of the 1980s he had joined Toumani Diabaté's Symmetric Orchestra.

Since then he has revolutionised the playing of the ngoni (an instrument dating back to the fourteenth century), adding extra strings to give him a wider melodic range and inventing new plucking methods to allow faster runs and more versatility. He also became the first ngoni player to use the instrument like a guitar, performing standing, instead of in the traditional seated position. As an accompanist, he went on to record with a wide variety of performers, including Taj Mahal, Ali Farka Touré, and the second Songhai album, before forming the ngoni quartet Ngoni Ba and making his debut as a band leader on 'Segu Blue', which won the 2007 BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music as best album. He followed it in 2009 with a second album, 'I Speak Fula', which was similarly praised, and he's very much in demand on the live circuit, as well as being an important collaborator with Africa Express.

***KASSE MADY DIABATÉ vocals (born Kangaba, Mali 1949)
Now in his early 60s, the veteran griot singer Kasse Mady Diabaté began performing with the Super Mandé orchestra more than 40 years ago. He went on to become lead vocalist with National Badema (previously known as Las Maravillas de Mali). The band originally consisted of Malian musicians who had been sent to Cuba by the Mali government to train in Havana's music conservatoires. After nearly eight years there, they returned home to find Mali under a policy of cultural authenticity under which the Maravillas were encouraged to develop a more indigenous rather than Cuban repertoire, and to take a Malian name, thus becoming National Badema (national family). And to help them create a more local sound, they recruited the traditional griot singer Kasse Mady, although their sound remained infused with a strong Cuban flavour.

He recorded his debut solo album 'Fode' in Paris, in 1989. An electric, dance-based recording produced by Ibrahima Sylla, he followed it a year later with a contrasting album of acoustic griot songs, 'Kela Tradition' (1990). He also sang on the fusion album 'Songhai 2' (1995) with Ketama and Toumani Diabaté. After almost a decade in Paris, he returned to Mali in 1998 and joined Taj Mahal, Toumani Diabaté and Bassekou Kouyate on the recording of 'Kulanjan' and became lead vocalist with Toumani's Symmetric Orchestra on the 2006 album, 'Boulevard de l'Indépendance'. AfroCubism is not the first time he has worked with Cuban musicians, for the late Buena Vista Social Club star Cachaíto López guested on his 2003 solo album 'Kassi Kasse'. His most recent solo album 'Manden Djeli Kan' appeared in 2009.

***DJELIMADY TOUNKARA guitars (born Kita, Mali in 1947)
Arguably the finest guitarist in Africa, Djelimady Tounkara was born in Kita and grew up playing drums and the xalam (lute). His parents wanted him to become an Islamic cleric but the plan was abandoned as soon as he saw and heard his first guitar. After early success playing in the Kita regional; band, by the mid-1960s he had moved to Bamako, where he joined Misra Jazz before he was promoted to join the state-sponsored Orchestre National as rhythm guitarist.

After the orchestra was disbanded, he joined the now legendary Rail Band in the early 1970s in what became known as their second period, playing at the Buffet Hotel de la Gare, next to Bamako's train station in a line up that included the singers Salif Keita and Mory Kante. He remained the Rail Band's arranger and lead guitarist throughout its glory years and in its later revival as the Super Rail Band, and continues to perform with them in Bamako to this day. In addition to appearing on all the Rail Band's recordings, he has also released the solo acoustic albums, 'Sigui' (2001) and 'Solon Kono' (2006) and 'Big String Theory' (2002) with his trio Bajourou.

***FODE LASSANA DIABATÉ balafon (born Conakry, Guinea, 1971)
Lassana Diabaté is recognised as the outstanding balafon (ancestor of marimba) player of his generation. Born in Guinea into a family of virtuoso balafon players, he grew up studying the instrument in the country's traditional style before moving to Mali where he took advantage of the greater freedom with which the balafon is played there. He became a protégé of the great Kélétigui Diabaté from whom he learned the technique of playing two balafons simultaneously, the additional instrument possessing the equivalent of the black keys on the piano.

He has appeared on albums by Salif Keita, Bassekou Kouyate, and Kasse Mady Diabaté among others, and has been a long-standing member of Toumani Diabaté's Symmetric Orchestra. He also played on 'Kulanjan', Toumani's celebrated collaboration with the American bluesman Taj Mahal.

***BABA SISSOKO talking drum (born Bamako, Mali, 1963)
Not only a master of the tamani (talking drum), Baba is equally adept at playing the ngoni, kamelngoni, bala and calabash. In the mid 1980s he was part of the prestigious Instrumental Ensemble of Mali orchestra, playing the tamani and ngoni. In 1991 he founded Baba Sissoko & Taman Kan, incorporating traditional Malian influences with blues, jazz and rock; they have toured extensively and released a number of albums. At the same time Baba forged a rather successful career collaborating with a whole host of musicians from both Mali and abroad, most notably his acclaimed 12 year relationship with Habib Koité.

Over the years Baba has released several solo albums and has worked with artists as diverse as Art Ensemble of Chicago, Angá Díaz, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Rokia Traoré, and AKA Moon. He also has taught traditional drum in Brussels, Belgium, and led conferences for the University of Calibre's Art, Music, and Spectacle Centre in Italy.

***JOSE ANGEL MARTINEZ double bass (born Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, 1977)
Studied double bass at the Conservatorio Estaban Salas, in the city of Santiago de Cuba, winning prizes at various city-wide and national Amadeo Roldán competitions. His first full time professional job was with Eliades Ochoa's Grupo Patria, joining several months after graduating in 2000.

Over the past decade has recorded and toured worldwide with Eliades, but has also recorded some tracks for the Grammy nominated album "Tributo al Cuarteto Patria" as well as playing on the album "Aires" by the famous Spanish singer José Mercé.

***JORGE MATURELL congas, bongos, cowbell (born Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, 1963)
Studied music at the Escuela de Nivel Medio Superior de Superación Profesional. In 1984 founded the Septeto Turquino, recording many albums including "Son para los Rumberos", which won the EGREM Prize in 1996, the prize of Bienes de Fondos Culturales, and special mention in the Opera Prima category in the Cubadisco Festival in 1997. In the late nineties he recorded "Amor a Santiago" with singer-songwriter Alberto Tosca, and "La Banda" with Francés Cirius Martínez.

In 2000 he joined Grupo Patria with whom he played on "Estoy Como Nunca" and "Tributo al Cuarteto Patria". He also played on "Aires" by José Mercé, and recorded with "Eliades Ochoa y la Banda el Jigüe". As well as being a percussionist he doubles as manager/administrator for Grupo Patria.

***ONSEL ODIT chorus vocals, rhythm acoustic guitar (born Granma, Cuba, 1965)
Was a long term member of Septeto Turquino with Jorge Maturell from 1984-2000. During this time he also performed and recorded with a variety of Cuban artists, and also won first prize in the OTI performance competition in 1998 and represented Cuba in the International event in San José in Costa Rica.

Over the past decade he has been a member of Grupo los Olivos, Grupo AKAN, and since 2005 has been a member of Grupo Patria. Onsel's own compositions have been performed by Sexteto Moneda Nacional, Morena Son, Adalberto Álvarez, Roberto Torres, Tamara, Eduardo Sosa, Oscar de León, amongst others. His music has also appeared in the film 9911 and in the hit US TV series Alias.

***EGLIS OCHOA maracas, guiro, chorus vocals (born Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, 1972)
Began his musical studies at Esteban Salas Conservatory as a violinist, although as a student would play periodically with Quinteto Oriente and Grupo Patria. At the end of his studies in 1994 he joined his father Eliades Ochoa as a full time member of Grupo Patria as vocalist and percussionist, where he has remained until this day.

As one of the longest serving members of the group, performed on the trio of Grammy nominated Eliades Ochoa albums at the start of the last decade, and toured extensively worldwide with the Buena Vista Social Club Star, enjoying the Cuban music boom that the project kick-started
